13 LEMUR THE THIRTEENTH
GENEVA (MONICA, 12 years old)
Call of duty. Opening speech.
Comrades, this day will be the proudest day in your lives. (explosions, panic, flashes) You will fight the fascist occupier with all your might. For every single fallen Soviet soldier, it is your duty to pay them back with at least ten of their lives. We won’t have any mercy for defeatists, cowards and traitors. (bewildered looks) Should anyone dare to leave their fighting position, they will be executed on the spot…
Hurraaaay!
Motto. There’s a warrior in each one of us. Location Leningrad. Apocalyptic, dystopic vision of real history. This can be heard:
Sevodnja, dvadcatvrorava ijunja, četiri česa utra slučilos abjavljenije vojni. Germanski vojska napalji našu stranu! (Translation from Russian: Today, on the twenty-fourth of June, at four o’clock in the morning, there was a military announcement. The German Army has attacked our side! )
The tramp of feet in heavy muddy boots which pinch the toes. MONIC 12 has in front of herself her right hand, dressed in a thick military coat and a warm glove made of hard material.
MONIC 12 holds an old gun. She looks over the weapon and nowhere else. From the top of a half-decrepit building she observes sights of the destroyed city moaning in the bitter cold. A glance down to the left. A snowbound street, poles fallen down. Nothing. A glance down to the right. Two dead members of the Red Army. Comrades. An abandoned tank. Stairs standing empty. An explosion in the distance. Then nothing again. Nothing. Blood freezes from the picture of coldness. Frost reaches the heart. Even though it’s so far away. Even though it’s nowhere.
MONIC 12 considers a change of weapons. The members of the Soviet side have a reasonably good selection of rifles: the automatic PPS42 is a good enough piece. Not especially strong, but it will kill after a few shots; the Mosin-Nagant – a very powerful machine. Still, not so fast as others; the Tokarev SVT40. Like a beast, a predator, extremely precise and destructive; the Mosin-Nagant with a spyglass. The sniper rifle, its precision is almost perfect. On the other hand, one should take care to hold the air while shooting, as this can pose a problem in the given climate circumstances; the PPSh – absolutely the fastest weapon at play. This is what is required.
All of a sudden, a blast. For a split second the sky becomes red, fiery. One should get away from here, run while there’s still time. But the steps are heavy, the breathing slow. Each breath is a death rattle. Smoke is all around. A shell has been fired.
MONIC 12 runs along the wooden roof boards. She jumps onto the stairs. She rushes out. The drama ceases for a moment. The sight is steady. A look through the half-demolished fence. A soldier rushes by in front. Red. Ours. Behind him, up to two rusty water towers. Snow falls more and more intensely.
We are on the offensive. One solitary soldier with a white
